ShamRock 2009
Often billed as the "biggest St. Patrick's Day
block party west of the Mississippi," ShamRock is literally rolling out the
green carpet (AstroTurf, actually) for the annual
event -- thousands of square feet of the green stuff.
This year's musical block party at Sixth and Market streets, in the Gaslamp
Quarter of San Diego, has
Irish rock legends the Young Dubliners, Celtic punk
rockers the Fooks, local Celtic bands, DJs and traditional Irish dancers.
Also on tap on the turf will be plenty of authentic Irish fare, all the green
beer you can stomach, and dancing till midnight. Face painters, stiltwalkers,
hat makers, green martinis (yes, even those drinks go green once a year) and
more will also be part of the celebration. About 20,000 people take to the
streets each year to party.
Tickets are $20 in advance ($25 at the gate) and include admission plus food and
drink specials at participating Gaslamp restaurants and bars. This event is
21-and-up only, and runs from 4 pm - midnight, Tuesday, March 17, 2009.
